Capture what takes you back to moments past and reminisce a little...
My parents weren't typical outdoor adventure-ists. There wasn't much in the way of high tech gortex or gorp or stuff like that. But they did have a huge sense of adventure and a thirst for seeing new places. Although comfortable, we didn't have a lot of extra in the family budget, so their answer was camping. As a kid I camped in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Acadia National Park in Maine, Lake Louise in Banff, Canada and along the coast of Southern California. Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore - we camped in all of those national treasures.
Last weekend Emma, Michael and I drove out west of DC to Shenandoah to catch Michael up with a weekend Scout camp out. After we dropped him off, Emma and I came across Shenandoah River State Park, and pulled in to explore and do a little hiking. Peaceful, beautiful, and so reminiscent of many other parks I've camped in...
Reminisce with others over on Sally's blog,
I've been to many of those same parks and they do inspire the most beautiful of memories.
ReplyDeleteI have been to none of those parks - but I bet they are spectacular! I've enjoyed several in Ontario and Quebec and mostly I can say I can really live without winter camping. I am not a good winter camper!! But that sure looks like a beautiful place for a hike, great discovery
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful. I just love walking and taking pictures in the parks though that has really been curtailed lately with my hubby's disability.
ReplyDeleteOh how gorgeous - your pictures are just superb! How lovely that you got to do this w/Emma. Odds are it will be something she will reminisce about!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I'm not to far from Shenandoah myself and love going there when the leaves turn. My husband and I camp in Acadia last summer! We're hoping to start the tradition with our son as well.
ReplyDeleteI remember family holidays... we tended to go to Radium and stay in the park in some old cabins... The federal government decided to have those removed 12 - 15 years ago as they were an eyesore or something.. however the left the large modern hotel that doesn't blend in to the park at all!
ReplyDeleteLovely pictures, I love the outer banks especially Okracoke!
My parents WERE NOT the outdoor people either. My dad was a lets say a "workaholic" and my mom just went along. But then I married my husband. While we haven't been to all those parks ( I would love to go) we have done lots of sight seeing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the beautiful pics! We live in NC for a while and I have been to the Outer Banks. Beautiful place!

Beautiful pics....I've never been to any of the places you mentioned.
ReplyDeleteThis took me right back to childhood! I grew up near the Shenandoah River in Clarke County. We used to go there to fish and have picnics. We did a lot of camping too, as my father was a pilot so he wanted to just be out in the wilderness when he was off. Our favorite place was The Cove Campground. http://www.covecampground.com/ Have you been?
ReplyDeleteStunning pics - so lucky to be able to stop and visit!
ReplyDeleteWonderful that you fond some place that brought back treasured memories!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful spot and I am sure you made some great memories for your daughter.
ReplyDeleteElisabeth your pics are great. It sounds like you and your daughter had a great memory making day.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos!! I'm so glad you have such wonderful memories of your travels to these beautiful places! Our own family loved to travel when I was a kid. We never camped but we did stay in many frightening motels since my dad was not one to splurge. There were several times we spent the night in our car, but those were the makings of stories to pass down.
ReplyDeleteLovely! Your camping memories are a real treasure.
ReplyDeleteI'm surrounded by countryside and water where I live and I never grow tired of it
